Former Grateful Dead Sound Engineer, Dan Healy Interviewed on KMUD

Thursday, Aug. 4 at 5pm, KMUD and the Southern Humboldt Amateur Radio Club present pt1 of a two part interview with Dan Healy. Among other achievements, Dan Healy grew up in SoHum, worked for many years as Sound Engineer for the Grateful Dead, built the first commercial radio station in SoHum and was instrumental in founding the Healy Sr. Center, a great resource for local seniors.

As sound engineer for the Grateful Dead, Dan was responsible for many innovations in music technology, and for making the Dead sound so good. He’s also a Ham radio operator and a member of SHARC. In pt. 1, Dan talks about growing up in SoHum, moving to the Bay Area and his involvement in the fledgling San Francisco music scene. He also talks about his early interest in electronics, radio and local Hams who inspired and mentored him.

Tune in to KMUD Thursday, Aug. 4 at 5pm to hear pt. 1. On Thursday September 1st at 5pm KMUD will air pt 2 in which Dan talks about some of the technical challenges of large scale sound systems, and why loudspeakers are a lot like radio antennas. Every month, on the first Thursday of the month, at 5pm SHARC presents a half hour radio show on KMUD called the SHARC Report, a show all about radio for radio lovers like you.

Artist bio: The writer in me says: “Don’t tell them who you are, show them what you do.” The artist in me says: “It must be strong, simple, bold, yet rich with detail, but above all, original.” The filmmaker in me says: “We need to contextualize your work by weaving the roots of the Psychedelic Revolution, the Environmental Movement, Gaia Theory, Future Primitivism and musical influences from Iannis Xenakis to Bart Hopkin into a narrative that portrays an iconoclast's struggle for cultural relevance from the forested hinterlands of rural Northern California within the greater post-industrial, post-post-modern, post-reality mind-fuck of the 21st Century.” The critic in me says: “Will that guy ever shut up?” The comedian in me says: “It has to make me laugh at least once.” The engineer in me says: “Don’t forget to tell them that you do it all off-grid, with solar power, using recycled materials.” And the improvisational musician in me says: “Cut! Great job everybody!”
