Grateful Dead Soundman Talks Sound and Technology on KMUD
On Thursday September 1st at 5pm on KMUD, the SoHum Amateur Radio Club, or SHARC and KMUD present pt 2 of a two part interview with Dan Healy. Dan worked for many years as sound engineer for the Grateful Dead, built the first commercial radio station in SoHum, and is a member of SHARC.
In part 2 Dan talks about his pioneering work building the “Wall of Sound” sound system for the Grateful Dead, some of the challenges of providing high quality audio at very large venues, and why speakers are like radio antennas. You can hear the SHARC Report, a radio show all about radio for radio lovers like you, on the first Thursday of every month at 5pm on KMUD.

Former Grateful Dead Sound Engineer, Dan Healy Interviewed on KMUD
Thursday, Aug. 4 at 5pm, KMUD and the Southern Humboldt Amateur Radio Club present pt1 of a two part interview with Dan Healy. Among other achievements, Dan Healy grew up in SoHum, worked for many years as Sound Engineer for the Grateful Dead, built the first commercial radio station in SoHum and was instrumental in founding the Healy Sr. Center, a great resource for local seniors.
As sound engineer for the Grateful Dead, Dan was responsible for many innovations in music technology, and for making the Dead sound so good. He’s also a Ham radio operator and a member of SHARC. In pt. 1, Dan talks about growing up in SoHum, moving to the Bay Area and his involvement in the fledgling San Francisco music scene. He also talks about his early interest in electronics, radio and local Hams who inspired and mentored him.
