Sat. Aug. 3 2013 6:30-9:30
Didgeridoo Performance at The Works Records in Eureka
On Saturday, August 3, from 6:30 to 9:00pm I will celebrate the release of two new CDs with a performance at The Works Records, as part of Arts Alive in Eureka.
Live Electric Didgeridoo features twelve electric didgeridoo solos recorded live at recent performances in SoHum. I developed a uniquely modern approach to this ancient aboriginal instrument over the past decade by combining my didgeridoo technique with my love of electronics and signal processing technology to create a timeless sound unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.
Live Electric Didgeridoo captures the energy of a live performance as well as the essence of my unique sound. I have not performed live in Eureka since July of 2008, so fans of unusual music will not want to miss this rare opportunity. I will perform many of the pieces from Live Electric Didgeridoo, several newer pieces, as well as a few improvisations at The Works on August 3.
I will also celebrate the NoHum debut of a CD that my life-partner, Amy Gustin and I recorded together as Tin Can Luminary, in our solar-powered home studio in Ettersburg, titled Um… Uh… Gum Eh? Um… Uh… Gum Eh? consists of music composed almost entirely with homemade and circuit-bent electronic instruments. Circuit-bending is the art of intuitively rewiring electronic devices to unleash their hidden, unintended musical potential.
For Um… Uh… Gum Eh? I created a collection of unique electronic instruments from objects ranging from cigar boxes, yard lamps and tin cans to educational alphabet learning toys and electronic toy keyboards he found at local thrift stores. Drawing from this unique palette of sounds, I composed and recorded the music for Um… Uh… Gum Eh?, with Amy and I both adding vocals to the instrumental tracks.
The recording of Um… Uh… Gum Eh? Involved multiple overdubs, computer manipulation, and features some unpredictable instruments, which make the music in Um… Uh… Gum Eh? prohibitively difficult to reproduce live, but between live sets of electric didgeridoo music, I will demonstrate a few of my circuit-bent creations and attendees will have the opportunity to hear some of the music I created with them.
Fans of boldly original music can find copies of Live Electric Didgeridoo and Um… Uh… Gum Eh? for sale at the performance, and in the “local music” sections of The Works Records in Eureka and People’s Records in Arcata, as well as at The Hemp Connection in Garberville.
On June 21-23 2013 I’ll be participating in the Summer Solstice Celebration at The Heartwood Institute near Alder Point CA. On Friday June 21, in the afternoon. I’ll perform on electric didgeridoo on the main stage. I’ll also play again on the main stage on Sunday June 23.
I’ll have a booth set up there all weekend. At my booth:
I’ll be debuting a brand new CD of electric didgeridoo solos recorded live at recent gigs at The Hemp Connection in Garberville, titled Live Electric Didgeridoo.
You can also get a copy of my other brand new CD of circuit-bent music titled Um… Uh… Gum Eh?
You can also pick up some of my previous CDs like:
A Pink Pair, 2009
Hand Made, 2006
Never Turn Your Back on the Sea, 2000
Hallucigenia Sparsa, 1998
I’ll also have a limited selection of my tin-can lanterns available for sale at the event as well.
Heartwood is a lovely place that’s full of good vibes. Come out and celebrate the return of Summertime.
