In the late 70’s/early 80’s when I was entering the workforce, the sought after jobs were those in the service economy – banking, investment industries, even software applications, etc because they were the jobs of the new economy. Not a trained economist, I believed that services were wealth re-distribution, not wealth creation. Common sense informed me that services could not become the economic foundation without a huge decline in overall wealth. What surprises me is how long it has taken for some of these basic principles to play out.
